Kiehl's: Staying True to Nature, Focused on Skincare
Founded in 1851 in Manhattan, New York, Kiehl's began as a pharmacy at the intersection of Third Avenue and 13th Street. The founder, Mr. John Kiehl, was a typical 19th-century pharmacist who continuously sought and developed effective formulations, providing New Yorkers with medicinal tonics and ointments extracted from natural ingredients, building an excellent reputation within the community.
In 1921, the pharmacy was passed down to Mr. Kiehl's apprentice, an outstanding graduate of the Columbia University College of Pharmacy, who began the Morse family's management of Kiehl's and expanded the business comprehensively. Products included tea, herbs, essential oils, honey, and original products under the Kiehl's brand.
In 2000, to meet the growing consumer demand for Kiehl's products, Jami Morse, the granddaughter of Irving Morse, decided to partner with the L'Oréal Group.
Old-World Apothecary Beginnings
The original Kiehl’s apothecary first serves patrons at the corner of 13th Street and Third Avenue in New York City.
Enter John Kiehl
After honing his trade as an ambitious apprentice, pharmacist John Kiehl purchases the apothecary. John Kiehl & Co. begins operations under “Kiehl Pharmacy.”
Aaron Morse Turns Up the Science
Aaron Morse takes over the business. The accomplished chemist formulates an early form of penicillin and supplies the U.S. government with a special Aloe Vera cream for use on radiation burns.
We continue to create skincare from natural origins, with our products deeply loved by customers and winning their hearts.

Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SQUALANE AND SQUALENE?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SQUALANE AND SQUALENE?

In our moisturizing cream, we derive the same skin benefits from Squalane, which is stable against heat and oxidation making it ideal for skincare formulations.
